Optum Expands Urgent Care Hours

Release Date: 1/7/2013

Longer Urgent Care Hours Means Convenience and More Patients Served

January 7, 2013 - Albuquerque, NM – Optum has introduced longer hours at three of its urgent care clinics as of December 26, 2012. The three centers, located in the Northeast Heights, Rio Rancho and Journal Center, will now be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week.

The longer hours are part of Optum’ efforts to implement a coordinated system of care that treats patients according to their needs. Studies show that approximately 80 percent of cases that are treated in emergency rooms could be treated at urgent care clinics instead. As a result, ERs are overburdened and patient costs are higher.

“By extending our urgent care hours, we’ll be able to treat more patients more effectively,” said Roderick McVeety, MD, Clinical Medical Director for Urgent Cares at Optum. “Many urgent cares in the area don’t open until 8 a.m. and close at 6 p.m., which can make it difficult for people who work 8 to 5 to get the medical care they need - or their family needs - outside of work hours. Our new hours are part of our commitment to put patients’ needs first.”

McVeety added that treating patients with non-emergency illnesses and injuries at urgent care clinics instead of ERs is safer and more appropriate in many cases. “We want to ensure that patients get the appropriate treatment in the right setting at the time they need it,” he said.  “This is also opportune timing given the current escalation in flu cases.”

Patients should visit urgent care rather than an ER for the following issues:

  • Ear, sinus infections, eye problems, sore throat
  • Upper respiratory infections, cough, congestion, flu
  • Mild to moderate asthma attacks
  • Minor skin problems such as insect bites, boils and rashes
  • Lacerations, deep cuts/wounds, burns, cysts
  • Sports injuries
  • Sprains, strains, deep bruises, broken bones
  • Diarrhea or other digestive ailments
  • Urinary tract infections

Optum is working on a further expansion of hours and capabilities at its Journal Center Urgent care clinic in the near future.
