ABQ Health Partners’ nationally-known Diabetes Educators look to inform community during National Diabetes Awareness Month

Albuquerque, N.M. — Nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association, and the cost of diabetes to the state of New Mexico is more than $2 billion annually. November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and the nationally-known diabetes educators at ABQ Health Partners are educating the community about some common signs and symptoms related to diabetes.

“While diabetes affects millions every day, Diabetes Awareness Month serves as an important time to raise awareness of diabetes and its consequences,” said Marjorie Cypress, NP, ABQ Health Partners Endocrinology. “At ABQ Health Partners we help patients focus on both the prevention and management of this disease.”

Some common symptoms associated with diabetes include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Extreme hunger
  • Sudden vision changes
  • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
  • Tiredness
  • Dry skin

“At ABQ Health Partners Diabetes Management and Endocrinology, we help educate individuals with diabetes so they can be more aware of their circumstances and how to live a healthy and normal life with diabetes,” said Donna Tomky, NP, ABQ Health Partners Endocrinology. “In terms of prevention, moderate weight loss and exercise can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes among adults at high-risk of diabetes.”
