HOW TO GET BACK-TO-SCHOOL READY

Albuquerque, N.M. — ABQ Health Partners clinics are taking steps to ensure children are healthy and ready to go back to school by providing low-cost sports physicals, immunizations and free consultations.

ABQ HP Urgent Care, Primary Care and Pediatrics clinics are now offering $55 sports physicals for those without insurance or those who have an insurance plan that doesn’t cover such visits.

“This service is great for all children getting ready to start athletics,” said Lance Wilson, MD, Urgent Care Medical Director. “The low cost and easy access, especially through Urgent Care Centers, allows families to efficiently take care of this important part of getting ready for fall activities.”

ABQ HP Pediatric clinics are also offering immunizations and no-cost consultations.

“It is important for children to have a pediatrician and to attend annual checkups,” said John Good, MD, ABQ Health Partners Pediatric Associate Medical Director. “ABQ Health Partners offers no-cost consultations and ‘parent-to-be’ visits so you can ensure our pediatricians are a good fit for your family. We also offer immunizations to help keep kids healthy by reducing the risk of preventable disease outbreaks.”

Here are a few tips to remember to help keep children safe and healthy this back-to-school season:

  • Don’t overstuff a backpack; it should weigh no more than 10 to 20 percent of your child’s body weight.
  • Ask your children to use both straps when wearing their backpack to evenly distribute the weight.
  • Be sure that your child knows his/her phone number, address and your cell or work number.
  • Teach your children to not accept rides from anyone unless you have said it’s okay.
  • If your child rides the bus, make sure they know to never walk behind the vehicle.
  • Parents and all New Mexico residents, remember it is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.
